Samuel Bassett

Samuel Bassett is a painter from St. Ives, Cornwall, whose paintings depict scenes, most recently imageyr of the coast and sea, along with his inner thoughts and feelings at the time. Bassett's paintings capture the fragments of his mind through a variety of mark-making and expressive brushwork. I'm particularly interested in the ways he portrays his inner monologue, using collaged imagery; both real and imaginary, to depict his feelings. The use of both imaginary and real imagery is something I want to explore and incorporate in my practice. Bassett mainly uses acrylic paint as it suits the speed at which he likes to work, constantly layering and adding while matching the speed of his thinking. The combination of figurative and abstract in his work create a blurred line between the internal and external, the portraits are 'often an extension of people that I see in myself' but also the people he meets, 'blurred with inner voices and feelings'. Bassett is constantly adding and removing aspects to his paintings as the initial ideas become more realised, the more figurative elements often becoming disrupted, creating a painting rich in depth. Basset says that he works on many paintings at the same time, as some won't always work out or he gets bored rather easily. This is an interesting way of working, allowing oneself to work through potential creative blocks and removing any pressure that may come with painting when it isn't working out or one is getting frustrated. I think that this is a great creative process to allow space for more ideas and directions.
